there were up to 7 entries available for rating in the second round. So max 7 for every language pair. In many cases, there were less than that. | | |
I think there were much more in French, for instance. But even in the first round, the order didn't change at all (at least not on my computer), because I could see the comments that I left on my previous visits. | | | Translators vs. translation agencies | Oct 21, 2009 |
I believe that translation agencies should not be allowed to participate in the contest intended for translators. Otherwise it's like a running competition when some people run on own feet and some other use motorbikes

Hi Geraldine, Yes, the order is always the same for a given user. But the problem is *random* does not mean *equal*. Statistics work with numbers (big numbers). Also, if you have 70 entries and 40 raters, it is clear that we should use a different method or system to give the entries the same chance to be read. About agencies: I totally agree with you, Alexander. Thank you for letting us know. Actually, I thought the contest was open to translators only and not companie... Sheila Wilson Spain Local time: 10:36 Member (2007) English + ... one individual entry from someone who runs an agency is OK, IMO | Oct 21, 2009 |
Alexander Onishko wrote: I believe that translation agencies should not be allowed to participate in the contest intended for translators. The rules clearly state that it must be the work of one person only (unless you have declared a pair entry). An agency is made up of individuals who specialise in translation and, as long as they obey the rules, I think they qualify as individuals. Of course, if all the translators who work for an agency pool their resources and knowledge, then that's unfair. | | | Silvia Prendin Italy Local time: 11:36 Member (2009) English to Italian + ... Sheila Wilson wrote: one individual entry from someone who runs an agency is OK, IMO. So how do we know who made the translation? If I register as Silvia, you can clearly tell who I am, but if I register as GreatLanguages Ltd, how do you know who's behind that name? Is it the person running the agency? Or a staff person? Who's going to win? | | | Sheila Wilson Spain Local time: 10:36 Member (2007) English + ... Does it necessarily matter? | Oct 21, 2009 |
Silvia P. wrote: So how do we know who made the translation? I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary for us to know, as long as the rules have been adhered to. The certificate would be made out to the agency (for hanging on the wall) and if there is a prize, well, it would be up to the agency to ensure it was given to the person who actually did the translation. Remember, a lot of the agencies present here on ProZ have a very small (even non-existent) permanent staff. | | | Pages in topic: < [1 2] | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Feedback on the 9th Translation Contest: ideas for improvement Wordfast Pro | Translation Memory Software for Any Platform
