General paper 2012 Jan 27, 2012

Hi Emma

I thought the general paper (I only sat that one) was fair overall and having read your comment that you found it on the Economist I thought I would search for it. Unfortunately I can't find it - please can you let me have the web-link? Also, do you know - was the Spanish version the original or was it a translation of the Economist article? It'd be ironoc if we were asked to translate a translation!!

Hopefully I won't regret reading the English version!

All the best.

Gerald McGrath

Hi Gerald,

Here is the link to The Economist article that we had to translate from English (into French in my case). It was about the changes of the kitchen over the years (the room itself and also cooking/ eating habits). If you had this text to translate then you will most certainly recognise the paragraphs. However, I would be surprised if they had used the same texts for translations from and into English. Would they really translate a text from English into other languages for candidates to translate back into English? Seems like an odd thing to do. I think they would be more likely to use an original text from the source language.

@Gerald, as you'll have seen, the Economist article was mentioned by Valérie.
I found the Spanish general paper here: http://www.laopinioncoruna.es/sociedad/2011/06/24/machu-picchu-amenaza-exito/508391.html
(I don't think it's quite complete)

@Valerie: Well, I'm pretty certain that the Spanish technology paper was a translation of the original printer leaflet.

What a strange thing to do, seems a bit unfair... This tech paper sounds like a real nightmare!

English to Spanish Unit 1 Jan 2012 Jan 28, 2012

Hi Emma

My mistake, I thought you found a translation of Unit 1 of the Spanish paper (in English) on the Economist's website! I found the original Spanish article by doing a Google search and I am pretty sure it was originally written in Spanish. So we weren't being asked to translate an article into English which had originally been written in English!

Best forget about it for another 13 or so weeks!

Best regards,

Gerald

Hi Valérie,

I was there too, translating into French as well. I found the general paper much trickier than the semi-specialised ones, but maybe that's only because it was the first one and I was not into it as much as for the other two. I took the business paper because I had to translate this kind of article on a daily basis in my previous job, and the social sciences one, and just like you, I finished right on time for each paper with just a few minutes to proofread. I have no idea how some people managed it in a shorter amount of time.

The most challenging for me was dealing with my exhaustion because of a crying little baby at home the night before (I hadn't had such a broken night in weeks!), but I was so determined, nothing could have stopped me

I am so looking forward to receiving the results and counting weeks...

How many people were there at Camden? At the British Council in Madrid we were just under a dozen in the two years I took papers.

Hi Maryline,

I know the feeling... Although my youngest child is older (5 years old), I wasn't feeling very bright on the day of the exam (we all had very bad colds the week before so we were still recovering). Actually, if the exam had been the week before, I don't think I could have come as I was in bed with a temperature. It's a bit harsh to only have one day a year to sit the exam... Like you, I am counting the weeks, and there is a long way to go... Bonne chance!

Hi Tomas,

Actually, I am trying to remember how many of us were there. There were several lines spread out in the big hall in Camden so I am gussing there were about 60 or 70 of us but anyone who was there too and is better than me at maths, please feel free to correct me!

Hopefully not too long to wait now... Apr 28, 2012

Hi Liliana, I hope someone can help you with regards to the Tech paper, personally, I didn't choose this option.
Can't be tooooo long now for us to get the results. After such a long wait I can hardly remember how I did in my papers. It's all a bit of a blur...
