Dear all,
I have worked as a freelance translator for just over two years now. I might say I entered the profession purely by accident, or perhaps I was destined for it eventually anyway. Prior to becoming a translator I worked in the IT industry for some 8-9 years, therefore naturally I have mostly done translations related some way or the other to IT.

Prior to becoming a translator I worked in the IT industry for some 8-9 years, therefore naturally I have mostly done translations related some way or the other to IT.
I have worked on different subjects throughout these two years though, a great deal in Mechanical subjects, such as OMMs for various building site machinery, but also I have somehow managed to get myself into medical translations. The medical translations have somehow turned into a passion. Which leads me to my query about specialisation. I have so far, among other things, translated IFUs for medical equipment, SmPCs, PLs and InterPacks. But I would love to do more work within this subject and of course improve in every aspect.
I do hope that perhaps Norwegian translators also read this as I do not wish to repeat myself in the Norwegian forum... My language pair is English - Norwegian. However, it would be useful to get input from both groups, non-language pair specific translators and Norwegian translators.
Where can I go from here? How does one go around specialising within areas? Due to my current workload and younger children, I can for one not find myself another job on the side - say in a hospital! (Although I have long dreamed about training to be a maternity assistant...until I realised that there is a true working life for me as a freelance translator...)
Perhaps there are some good books? - I love reading, so it shouldn't be difficult for me to find interest in reading medical books. Here it would be nice with an input from Norwegian medical translators. I am heading to Norway next week so I'll to start with invest in a good medical dictionary (EN-NO/NO-EN), but has anyone got any advice for a VERY good medical (primarily Norwegian only - to keep the descriptions, explanations, perhaps even pictures broad) terminology book. As anyone purchasing books in Norway, knows that it is a true investment due to the cost of books there.
I would really love to hear back from those who can really help me on this area.
An extra question which I just thought of now - how many subjects to translators REALLY specialse in?
