Clipboard manager Aug 27

When you cut, copy and paste content on your computer, you are using your operating system’s clipboard, a buffer for short-term storage and transfer.

Typically, each new cut/copy operation overwrites the previous one, so only the last copied content is remembered.

One of the reasons why I submitted this poll is simply to raise awareness about this feature among fellow linguists, since I find it extremely useful in a translation context.

While many GNU/Linux users probably know about clipboard managers, I suspect (and the poll results seem to confirm my assumption) this is not the case when other operating systems are involved, although there are many such programs for MacOS or Windows (and I think Windows 10 has introduced an integrated clipboard manager in a recent update).

I use GPaste (GNU/Linux) myself, but Windows/MacOS users are welcome to offer OS-specific suggestions!

On my Mac, I use Keyboard Maestro's integrated clipboard manager, which is in fact a macro.

Yes and no Aug 27

Yes, I use this little program, but only to cut and paste specific sections of the screen. When we use the regular clipboard and press PrtScr, you can only take a snapshot of the full screen. Then you have to open it in some image editor to cut and paste only what you want. So I use this to cut and paste only the part I want. It's actually not a clipboard manager, as it replaces the clipboard in some cases.

I seem to remember there was one edition of Windows (98?) that had this "feature" - or maybe it was a part of Office - and frankly, I found it to be a bloody nuisance. Instead of just copying and pasting using keyboard shortcuts, I had to deal with miniature menus that kept popping up all over the place and getting in the way. I think I eventually found out how to turn it off.

Just one person's opinion.

Good morning Jean,

I confirm that Windows 10 provides such a feature (clipboard history) since update 1809 (Settings/System/Clipboard - here the French version):

The function is disabled by default. Just enable it.

Have a nice day!
