I don't know anyone else my age who isn't retired, but I have no intention of stopping as long as my clients continue to send me work.

I started freelancing when I retired from my in-house position, so like Muriel I’m well beyond retiring age. If genes have to be blamed, my father worked as a consultant until the day he died at 93 and my mother who died recently at 105 used to say that the worst decision she ever took was to stop working at 90…

My plan is to keep on working until I am physically or mentally unable. I'm part of the "boomer" generation and, due to a rather hedonistic liefestyle in my younger days, didn't really expect to live until retirement age, so never made any plans or set aside anything for a rainy day. Nowadays I manage to achieve a good enough work/life balance and I enjoy my work, so it's not a big issue.

I've never met a retired translator Aug 17

Several colleagues I've known over the years were found dead at their desks, having worked until the moment they died. My mentor worked until a month before he made the Great Translation – in hospice – in his mid-80s.

I have my Danish ´folkepension´ in place, and could live on it, in the sense of keep body and soul together. Quite well by world standards. However, why stop? It means I can afford to see my relatives in England and Sweden and wherever, or go to museums and see glass art and other things to save me getting bored. I can attend a powwow or otherwise meet up with colleagues. As long as I can set the pace and clients put up with my whims, I intend to carry on!

People talk a lot of rubbish here about the burden of the elderly when we get old and sick, or grey gold if we keep on working. I am saving up a few credits as long as I can, before I fall into the burden category! And if I am lucky and can work to the end, then of course that's fine by me.

Pay yourself first Aug 17

I've got a good 25-30 years until retirement age - I put money aside each time I am paid, per invoice.

As freelancers, even when the going is tough, we have to remember to pay ourselves first and to be disciplined about saving because it adds up quickly.

I come from a very large family of hard-working people, both on my father’s and my mother’s side. My mother was indeed a very special lady, at a time when most women didn’t study at all she not only completed her piano studies in the Music Conservatory, but also acquired a degree in Romance Languages and Literature.

I don't plan on being retired. Having said that, I haven't exactly got much translation work these days, so I'm pretty idle most of the time. If the translation work dries up completely, I will move on to something else, possibly a career as a best-selling novelist.

I am past retirement age, but have no plans to ever retire from freelancing. I can't imagine not working, and I need the income as well as I still have a mortgage to pay.

No money, no retirement Aug 17

The crisis in Brazil gets worse by the day. With the advent of machine translation, there are less and less jobs on the market, and rates get lower and lower. Hence, I never have money to save for retirement, and shall have to work until the end of my days. Now, to make this dire situation even worse, the deeply unpopular Brazilian President plans to cut retirement pay, so people who are lucky enough to have retirement savings will now only get a part of what they put in. (I know this is not the place to discuss politics, but the devastating effect the new pension reform will have on workers must be mentioned IMHO)Collapse
