My name is Michał Kornacki. Apart from being a freelance translator, I work as an assistant professor at the Insitute of English Studies, University of Lodz, Poland.
I am conducting a study on how freelancers use machine translation in their daily work. The results of the research will be used to further develop translator training programme at the Univerisity of Lodz and will be shared with the academic community and translation trainers in the hope that more specialised translation courses will become available to students of translation.
The research is directed to professional freelance translators. It consists of a number of questions. While most of them are multiple-choice questions, some (optional) will require you to share your personal opinion. The entire survey should not take more than 10-15 minutes.

I know that Asst. Prof. Kornacki meant well and business education is a must; however, I often see similar polls biased to infamous PE-MT tricks.
A couple of years ago, I learnt in the CIS there are some 90% of graduated translators who can't find the job in their major, which makes me wonder where they really go. Perhaps, only Mandarin, Spanish, and a few not-so-popular language pairs are doing a little better for now.

DZiW, English is still a very popular major in Poland. At my Institute, we get approx. 120 new students each year, ~70% of those choose translation track. It is paramount for us, staff, to provide them with the best possible education in order to make them competitive when they enter the market. Hence the study.

It is true, however, that it is increasingly difficult to start a career as a freelancer. And, in my opinion, the way MT is getting better and better, does not help.
It is my belief that we should train people how to post-edit MT-based translations as there will be more and more of those in the near future...
