hello,

We are a company in Spain working with a Czech translator, who is not VAT registered. The Spanish authorities demand an exemption number/law to be quoted in the invoices. Otherwise VAT needs to be paid in Spain. Does anyone know what the correct sentence is that our Czech translator needs to quote?

The Czech translator must registrer as an "Identified entity" Dec 19, 2014

and the VAT will be due in Spain anyway. EU directives do not permit any other solution, I am afraid. An "identified entity" (identifikovaná osoba) is VAT registered only for their business with other EU countries, without paying any VAT (not for their local business, and as to EU business, it is subject to "reverse charge" - i.e., payable in the client's country.) VAT exemption does not work between EU countries.

Either this

Tax exemption according to VAT Law no. 235/2004

or that

Invoice in Reverse charge mode. The buyer is obligated to fill in the VAT amounts and pay the tax.

as the case may be.
