Where does My Memory pull its translation from?

I happened on a project in which the MyMemory translation is so good that it appears to come from the same text having been translated in the past.

Is there a way to verify the source? I'm worried about copyright issues.

Hi Serena,

This is rather a question for Translated, the provider of the MT service:

When you go to the Machine Translation tab in Matecat (a CAT tool made by Translated, the same company that runs MyMemory), the default machine translation Engine is MyMemory.

Here is what the description looks like:

"Machine translation from Google Translate and Microsoft Translator."

I think they use a smart algorithm to determine which to use in each case. But on top of this, MyMemory is a public TM (Translation Memory).

So if it feels that the project had been translated before, maybe the good bits do NOT come from MT but from the public TM matches.

In CafeTran specifically, the MyMemory MT tab shows three/four suggestions; the first is the MT output, and the others are fuzzy matches from the public TM.

It's mainly because of My Memory that I find CafeTran so useful. My Memory is as good as, and often better than, say, Deepl.

And I don't mean *MY* memory - although it's pretty good.
