CafeTran Espresso 2018 offers the translator a lot of useful features that SDL Studio doesn't offer (and vice versa). The answer to the question whether CafeTran Espresso can be a full replacement for SDL Studio has evolved since the recent introduction of a feature to import SDL Multiterm XML files:

https://www.proz.com/forum/cafetran_support/324916-import_of_multiterm_xml_glossaries.html

CT's handling of Studio's packages and XLIFF files has always been very good. Recently, the 'Approved' segment status has been added:

https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/discussions/topics/6000054033

What is still missing to make CafeTran Espresso 2018 a full replacement for SDL Studio 2017?

  • Direct import of Multiterm termbases (now you need either an exported Multiterm XML file or to use this cross-platform solution: http://www.vannellen.com/fortranslators.php )
  • Studio's track changes feature (currently, CT cannot handle these)

So the answer to the originating question becomes: Yes, CT can be a full replacement for SDL Studio, as long as you don't need to work with tracked changes and (in cases where translation packages include terminology) if your client is willing to export terminology to Multiterm XML (or – alternatively – if you are willing to use the Van Nellen solution to unpack Multiterm termbases yourself).

(The intriguing question remains: why doesn't offer CT its own solution to unpack Multiterm termbases.)

Track changes May 7, 2018

The lack of track-change abilities in CafeTran in sharing packages is the main reason why our school district has not changed from Trados to CafeTran, even though the price is way friendlier. We have to have track changes for reviewing and final accepting or rejecting of suggestions and corrections. And pdf reading, too, if they haven´t already.Collapse

That's interesting news!

As a temporary work-around you could use comments instead of tracked changes:

But I admit: They ain't the real thing.

The Thomas van Nellen solution is available under Java 10 now: https://www.proz.com/forum/cafetran_support/327749-extract_the_content_of_studio_term_bases_to_use_in_cafetran.html

I'll try to integrate conversion of Studio term bases in an automated workflow for Mac.

All credit goes to Thomas van Nellen (https://www.proz.com/profile/579962 ), who has kindly recompiled his tool to enable it for Java 10.

Great news: finally it's there. CafeTran Espresso 11 supports tracked changes in Studio projects.

    • Tracking Changes. This new feature is available via the Edit > Track Changes > Manage menu. See the Changes tab after activation. There, you can Accept and Reject changes to the current target segment.
    • Filtering on tracked changes via the Filter menu.
    • Accepting or rejecting all tracked changes in one task via the Task menu.

CafeTran 11 offers both features. As a matter of fact, the support of MultiTerm term bases was added years ago …

    To be more precise:

    2019 10.0 Croissant (20190117)

    • Import of SDLTB termbases.
