Strange message

Hello,
I started a new project and keep getting the message "Translator.json.JSONException: JSONObject["translatedText"] not a string." in a right banner (MyMemory MT). Any ideas what this could be about?

I think it means that MyMemory online resource returns empty strings (nothing). Perhaps they are updating their servers, which are temporarily unavailable.

I just checked if it works with another language combination (French to German) and it does! The problem only arises with the English to German project. Any ideas what could be the cause?

Just tested in EN>DE, MyMemory MT works just fine for me. So I don't know at this point.

I would try restarting CafeTran.

Also, do you have an email in the MyMemory API parameters when you go to Edit > Preferences (Options) > MT?

If not, try registering one (at https://www.translated.net/en/ I think).

I tried restarting Cafetran and also opening a new project with the same text under another name, to no avail. This is very strange ...
I also checked de MyMemore API parameters and all looks fine. I'm kind of lost

If it doesn't show the translation result, it means either their service may be temporarily down or they can have some daily limits. MyMemory Machine Translation is an independent Internet service which CafeTran just connects to. If it doesn't show the translation result, it means either their service may be temporarily down or they can have some daily limits. Also, I would suggest finishing your current project and updating CafeTran to the latest 2018 Akua version as described here: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/discussions/topics/6000052675 - the new version handles some machine translation service connection errors better.

Since this is the new version of the program, you need to complete your projects before updating. Do not update in the middle of your project.

The latest version of CafeTran has a nice browser interface to other Web MT services (DeepL, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator) which you can use in case of one of them becomes unavailable. See the Translate button in the source segment toolbar to send the current source segment to the web MT service. Use ALT+V shortcut to transfer the web MT translation to the target segment.

I finished my short project, installed the latest Cafetran version and got the same problem. What really bothers me is the fact that this problem only arises with English to German text and not with French to German translations. How can this be? If the connection to the MyMemory Machine Translation is down, this should apply to all versions - or that's at least what I would imagine (I'm be no means a technical expert ...)

Make sure that your language pair set for MyMemory is English > German indeed, via Edit > Preferences > MT services tab > MyMemory. Normally, CafeTran picks the language pair automatically based on your project languages. However, if you translate projects created in other CAT tools, their language codes may be different. Then, just select the languages manually.

English to German MT works just fine here in CafeTran's projects.

The language pair is correct, i.e. English to German. It's a real mystery!
I think I'll try it on my other two computers just to see what happens there.

I know tried to translate my English to German text on my laptop but I have the same problem there: no MyMemory.
Opening preferences, I have no email under MyMemory API parameters, if I work from English to German.
When translating a French text, the MyMemory works perfectly fine and I have the email [email protected] under MyMemory API parameters.

Can someone please tell me what I should do? I'm completely lost...

... but still the same problem. AAARGGH!
French to German works like a charm, still no results when translating English to German. Preferences are the same, i.e. my own email address. This is driving me crazy ...
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Obviously, I don't know how to fix this, but here are some thoughts:

For now, it seems we have determined that :
- it is not a matter of the email address you have entered in the API parameters (I recommend that you use your own address, now that you have registered with Translated.net);
- it is not a general MyMemory server issue, since other language pairs work for you;
- it is not a general CafeTran issue with MyMemory and this language pair, since at least on my installation, I get MT results for EN>DE not my language pair, just tested).

To further isolate the issue, I would suggest the following:

Download a fresh CafeTran copy without replacing the existing installation, and launch CafeTran. By the way, what is your OS? Windows, OS X or Linux?

In Preferences, reset Preferences, just to be sure, and add your email to the MyMemory MT preferences.
Also, make sure the language pair is correctly picked up by MyMemory.

If this works, then it may be an issue with the CafeTran preferences of your proper installation, and you can Reset the preferences as well.

If this does not work after resetting the Preferences (if needed), or if the issue is still there on the test CafeTran installation, you may want to open a ticket on https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/ and more precisely: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new
