An Overview

An overview of ways to have a glance at your source document while translating in CafeTran.

Outside CafeTran, in the app that created the source document or in Preview (Mac). Pro: It’s the easiest way, and it shows you the original. Contra: You’ll need enough screen estate, syncing and/or requires a “homemade” script/macro.

Using CafeTran’s new resource feature for Cloud solutions (like OneDrive, iCloud, DropBox, etc.), to be found under Tools | Webbrowser | Open Website for Source Preview. Pro: It shows you the original, CafeTran will sync it for you during translation. Contra: You’ll need an Internet connection, an NDA may prohibit you to upload the source document, not suitable for all file formats.

Using CafeTran’s new resource feature for HTML solutions, to be found under Tools | Webbrowser | Open HTML Page for Source Preview. Pro: It’s local, so no Internet connection required. Most file formats can be converted to nice HTML representations, CafeTran will sync it for you during translation, no NDA worries. Contra: The conversion to HTML can be a pain however, and it’s not “the real thing” (but usually more than good enough for the purpose).

Both the Cloud and the HTML view can be achieved by setting them up in the “old” way, in Tools | Web. Pro: (as compared to the Tools | Webbrowser approach): You can easily set it up so it “sticks,” meaning that if you select a general name for the source document (like CurrentJobWord, CurrentJobExcel, etc), you’ll find the source document listed on your DashBoard. The process can be automated entirely. Contra: So far no sync/search possible.

By the way, the various views triggered by CafeTran can be displayed both in the tabbed pane (as above), and floating. If you decide to make the view floating, you can enlarge it to achieve the result as shown in the first screenshot. For screenshots, see 2nl's contributions.

A Preview
Terminology isn’t CafeTran’s strongest point. According to me, a Preview would be a snapshot of the translation process at any given time, like this real-time preview

This hasn’t been implemented in CafeTran, and as far as I’m concerned, there’s no need for it (nor for the WYSIWYG as in the grid above; it’s a pain, if you’d ask me). However, you can create a preview for MS Office documents at any given time in the translation process by selecting Project | Export Current Document.

Cheers,

Hans

two points Jun 20, 2015

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the overview. However, I'd like to make two points:

(1) Although syncing of the current segment does work via Tools > Webbrowser > Open Website for Source Preview, it doesn't yet support automatic scrolling (like the local HTML solution), which can be a real pain.

(2) To a native speaker, the term "preview(ing)" doesn't sound as bad as you think it does, as what you are doing is creating an HTML preview of the source docume

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the overview. However, I'd like to make two points:

(1) Although syncing of the current segment does work via Tools > Webbrowser > Open Website for Source Preview, it doesn't yet support automatic scrolling (like the local HTML solution), which can be a real pain.

(2) To a native speaker, the term "preview(ing)" doesn't sound as bad as you think it does, as what you are doing is creating an HTML preview of the source document.

Note that memoQ calls the pane that contains such a preview, the "View pane". Thus, in memoQ, the View Pane, can contain an HTML preview:

Oxforddictionaries.com has the following

preview: [Computing] A facility for inspecting the appearance of a document before it is printed.
