A TMX exported by WFC uses "ph" tag pairs for placeables markers. Text formatting is not included in the TMX (nor is it included in the native TM format). If a source text file uses tags for formatting, and those tags have been marked by WFC as placeables, then they will obviously be included in the TM and in the TMX file.

Do you mean carriage returns (CR, Alt+010) inserted in Excel by Alt+Enter?
There may also be line feeds (LF, Alt+013) in cells but don't know how to insert them in Excel. Possibly they come when pasting from other applications.

Currently CT displays carriage returns as paragraph marks and imports all cell contents as a single segment. This may not be good when translating (optional: segment / do not segment cell contents) but for the requested bilingual Excel feature it may be helpful, e.g. column A = Original Text, Column B = (Partially) Translated Text. Any carriage returns inserted accidentally by the translator do not prevent alignment of A1 with B1.

No, I was translating automation strings this morning. In software strings (e.g. for error messages) the return is represented by '\n'.

When \n is not surrounded by spaces, it can interfere with term recognition.

Numbers between curly brackets, like {1}, represent placeholders for variables in these strings.
