Donna author and educator David Bowles received an award last week from the Texas Institute of Letters. He accepted the Diehl Fraser award for Best Translation of a Book for Flower, Song, Dance: Aztec and Mayan Poetry at the 78th annual meeting of the organization in San Marcos.

“It feels humbling and exciting to be recognized with this award,” the 43-year-old wrote. “I am also deeply gratified that my studies of Nahuatl and long hours poring over ancient documents have produced something that the state’s top writers consider vital and noteworthy.”

Bowles, who also writes the weekly book review column “Top Shelf” for The Monitor, works as an administrator at Donna Independent School District and teaches at The University of Texas-Pan American. More.
