What stupid answers!!!

I find the opportunity of standing while working not so bad, but those "proper" tables cost a fortune.

The idea behind them seems plausible. However, I would need to try one out first before deciding if I wanted to invest in one or not. I'd be quite happy to have a permanent standing desk option, but I'd also keep the traditional sitting-down system as well. The problem is that the price appears to be prohibitive and I don't know of anywhere you can actually try them out.

I can't even stand for more than 30 seconds, with or without a desk, so - if anyone and anything wants to stand, have fun, I'll go on being the person who sits down as soon as things get interesting.

What I don't understand (as a non-standing person) - why would a standing desk be more expensive than a regular one? Isn't it just a flat surface with four table legs attached, and all you have to do is buy longer table legs, or if those are not readily available, buy other long narrow

Isn't it just a flat surface with four table legs attached, and all you have to do is buy longer table legs, or if those are not readily available, buy other long narrow wooden items? I mean come on, trees *grow* long and narrow, there must be some kind of appropriate structures for sale somewhere.

Nay Mar 26, 2017

I tried one, though my back likes it, my legs and feet don’t…

Motorized desk Mar 26, 2017

I switch between sitting and standing numerous times a day.
When deadlines are looming, I usually remain seated.

Back pain .. Mar 26, 2017

Standing up, and standing still at the same time for more than 3 to 4 minutes kill my back. (Un)fortunately, the elevation mechanism broke down (due to overload). A stroll in the garden or up and down stairs do the trick for me.

As much as I can stand ;) Mar 26, 2017

I work standing at a shelf in my laundry room because it's exactly the right height. I have my monitor set on an apple box so that I'm looking straight ahead. If my feet get sore, I pull up a height-adjustable stool. I have no more ergonomic complaints. Also, the washer and dryer make for excellent white noise.

Why not as an option Mar 26, 2017

When you have a long day ahead, it is nice to change position.
I prefer to stand up and walk round to the boulangerie and buy a baguette or walk along the Loire for a few minutes.

Stand-up desks aren't necessarily expensive Mar 26, 2017

I have a stand-up desk, a treadmill and a balance board and in total they cost me around £500 (£200 for the desk, £200 for the treadmill and £100 for the balance board). So if you already have a normal sit-down desk and have the room to add a stand-up desk, it doesn't have to cost too much. It gets expensive if you buy a motorised desk that adjusts for both a sitting and standing set-up.

There are lots of possibilities to get standing easily and cheaply. You can add a Varidesk (several options available with a range of prices) on top of your current desk so you can stand up without needing to invest in new furniture. Andrew Morris describes his experience with this set-up in a guest post on my blog.
If you're interested in reading that post, about my own set-up and recommendations and also Allison Klein's sit-stand arrangement, you'll find them on this Work-Life Balance page on my blog: https://nikkigrahamtranix.com/work-life-balance/

Not for me Mar 26, 2017

I had one of those adjustable desks when working in-house, but I rarely used the standing option.

...as I am sitting in an electric wheelchair. Apart from this - why not?
