Finance theory teaches that investment decisions should be made using a discounted cash flow (DCF) or net present value (NPV) analysis with a cost of capital based on the systematic risk of the opportunity.
Graham and Harvey (2001) find that 75% of CFOs always or almost always use such analyses, using them as often as internal rates of return.
Gompers et al. (forthcoming) find that private equity investors rely primarily on internal rates of return and multiples to evaluate investments.
They infrequently use NPV methods.
We repeated the analyses in those two papers by asking our respondents a number of questions on the financial and valuation metrics they use.
First, we asked how important financial metrics such as internal rate of return (IRR), cash-on-cash return, or NPV are in making investment decisions.
The most popular methods are cash-on-cash multiples (63% of the sample) and IRR (42% of the sample).
Only 22% of the VC investors use NPV methods.
While this level of reliance on NPV would be considered low for mature firms, the response rate does go against anecdotal evidence that VCs rarely use NPV to evaluate investments.
One possibility is that our sample has a substantial proportion of MBA graduates who were exposed to modern finance valuation methods in school.

Source text - English Several months ago Simon Kuper published what seemed to me a bizarre piece in the weekend edition of the Financial Times arguing that native English speakers are handicapped by the fact that the entire world (or to be more realistic, the global middle and ruling classes) are able to read or speak English. This gave to the latter the advantage of fully understanding English speakers, their opinions, prejudices and motivations, while taking away all incentive for the native English speakers to learn foreign languages (why bother, if everyone speaks your language) and thus to understand and influence other cultures that still conduct most of their bread-and-butter business using national languages.
What I found odd in Kuper’s piece was that it reversed the normal and long-standing view that having foreigners learn your language was always a mark of cultural or technological superiority, that it entrenched that superiority, and was therefore a very desirable thing. Greece influenced Romans through their love and awe of the Greek language (what Gibbon called “the perfect idiom”), and thus transmitted its culture and way of thinking. It is not for nothing that such diverse emperors as Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and Julian were Hellenophiles, often more at ease in Greek than in the rather coarse Latin. (I am writing this some 200 meters from the Hadrian’s Gate in Athens.)

Before you buy, check the quality, design and material. The authentic article is extra thin and shining – porcelain cannot be heavy, and items that are heavy are earthenware, not porcelain.
Orenburg Shawls
Orenburg Shawls are a symbol of Russian comfort. They feel warm and thick but are light and delicate like a spider web. They are made of handspun goat fibre, the world’s finest, which makes the shawls exceptionally tender and soft. A high-quality shawl can be pulled through a wedding ring. These shawls were first shown internationally at the 1857 Paris World Fair, which was just the beginning of their global fame. They became so popular that a British company even produced its own fibre shawls and called them “Orenburg shawl imitation”. Today, some of the world’s most elegant women, such as Montserrat Caballé and Catherine Deneuve, have Orenburg shawls in their wardrobe.

The iGadget watermelon slicer (£4.05, amazon.co.uk) is a double-bladed, flexible scoop used to segment a gourd along its interior wall, then grip and lift the portion.
Why?
When life gives you melons, make do with this melon-aid.
Well?
Shaun Ryder spent the early 90s slurring allegations about people twisting his melon, man, a complaint dismissed as the ramblings of a drug addict. Yet what if he was on to something? What is the best way to prep melon? Don’t say ball! To skilfully ball a melon separates men from boys (unless we’re talking about the adolescent interpretation, which works the other way around) and gives a pretty result. But twisting the spoon to carve such perfect balls necessarily means leaving some precious flesh behind; it’s inefficient.
This watermelon slicer from something called iGadget Tradings (me neither) is here to fix that for you. “Now you can slice your watermelon easily. Now you can cut out perfect pieces. You can get the most of the watermelon,” read the instructions, like an unambitious Darth Maul. Already in these words I detect a note of dolour. It’s a feeling amplified by the “High Quality” stamp printed on three sides of the box, which makes me feel sadder than words have ever done. This is something to do with the box’s low-grade finish, and the fact that quality is like status: if you announce it, you’ve lost it.

The slicer is a double-bladed scimitar, one side heavily serrated, the other marked with air holes. (To reduce drag coefficient inside a melon? Bring down the weight? A mystery.) I pull the curving, joined blades toward me, scraping the hull of the melon, then flip the tool and use it as tongs. It feels like taking a fruit biopsy, and isn’t terrible. It is more efficient than a spoon. But is it relevant? These are awful times. For my money, the only way to eat a melon now is to push your entire face into it, teeth first, lifting your head once you have purchase on the flesh, so you can wear it as an enormous, Frank Sidebottom-style smile. Anything else would mean facing the void.
Any downside?
I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller, I wish I had a melon that looked good, I would eat her. But it’s October.

Но это вызов обществу и плохой пример детям. Есть решение – ложка. Есть еще решение - более удобное и приличное, чем ложка.
Его предлагает iGadget Tradings (не спрашивайте, кто это, я все равно не знаю).
Пост-панки 90-х пели песни про головы, которые раскалываются как арбуз. Им не очень верили, списывали все на наркотические глюки. А вдруг им и правда было откровение? Может есть какой-то секретный способ вскрыть суть?
Ну и?
Умение мастерски проникнуть в сердцевину и ощутить наслаждение от каждой капли делает мальчика мужчиной.
Но если наворачивать шарики ложкой как мороженое часть драгоценной плоти остается на стенках. Это неаккуратно.
«Теперь вы можете легко разрезать арбуз. Теперь у вас будут получаться идеальные кусочки. И вы сможете выжать все до последней капли», утверждает инструкция к гаджету.
Скорбь в этих словах. Скорбь в штампе «Высшее качество» на каждой стороне упаковки, которая могла бы быть и получше. Скорбь отзывается в моем сердце, ведь качество как хорошая шутка говорит само за себя.
Это обоюдоострый серп: жутковатые зубья с одной стороны и непонятные дырки с другой (может, чтобы легче преодолевать сопротивление арбуза или уменьшить вес гаджета? Загадка!) Протаскиваем двойное лезвие сквозь арбуз, выскребываем дно, переворачиваем другой стороной и используем как щипцы. И совсем не страшно, всего лишь фруктовое расчленение.
Минусы?
Хочу быть выше ростом, хочу быть круче, хочу найти, не арбуз, нет, я не по этому делу, а чудную-пречудную дыню, есть ее всегда. Но до марта еще далеко.
На видное место, в ящик, подальше в шкаф?

Индустрия онлайновых free-to-play игр начинает стремительно развиваться, почти в каждом доме уже есть быстрый интернет, но за этими процессами не успевают банки - платежные карты есть у считанных процентов населения.
Складывается уникальная ситуация:
тысячи пользователей по всей стране готовы платить за виртуальные товары и внутриигровую валюту, но лишены возможности это делать.
Этой бизнес-возможностью решил воспользоваться студент механико-математического факультета Пермского госуниверситета Шурик Агапитов.
Летом 2005 года он запустил сеть кэш-киосков 2pay.ru, позволяющих оплачивать сервисы и внутриигровые товары наличными.
Рынок развивался стремительно.
На тот момент игр, поддерживающих такие транзакции, существовало несколько сотен; конкурирующих сетей кэш-киосков - около сотни.
Довольно быстро в этих индустриях начались процессы консолидации:
крупнейшим оператором онлайновых free-to-play игр стала Mail.ru, кэш-киосков - компания Qiwi.
Шурик оказался в ситуации сложного выбора:
