Source text - English 2.In Article 2 of the letter concerning the claims of Hungarian authorities it is claimed that the buffers tested according to EN 15551:2009+A1: 2010 are to be kept waiting for 30 days and tested again to see that there is no change in the buffer diagrams. No such requirement is stipulated in the European Standard EN 15551:2009+A1: 2010 on "Railway Applications-Railway Rolling Stock-Buffers". Therefore, such a test is not performed.
3.In the Article 3: our Company lubricate the buffers with EP2 grease oil during the maintenance of the wagons and in the controls of the train and it is delivered to the Bulgaria railway train operators (BDZ Cargo etc.) with lubricated buffers. However, if the wagon buffers of the Gysev Cargo trains are detected as unlubricated, then Annex 9 / Article 5.2.3 of the GCU shall be executed.

Cikkében azt állítják, hogy az EN 15551:2009+ 1: + A2010 30 szerint tesztelt puffereket 30 napig kell hagyni, és újra meg kell vizsgálni, hogy a pufferdiagramok nem mutatnak változást. Source text - Romanian Când au ajuns primii războinici maghiari la Porta Mesesina/Poarta Meseşeană ? De la ipoteze la realităţi arheologice
a. Introducere
Dintre sursele istorice care fac referiri la primele incursiuni ale maghiarilor în Transilvania pe parcursul sec. X., Gesta Hungarorum sau Cronica lui Anonymus reprezintă un important document , în ciuda criticilor/contestărilor formulate în literatura de specialitate .
În Capitolele XXI şi XXII din Gesta Hungarorum, Anonymus descrie momentul în care cele două grupuri de războinici maghiari, primul condus de Zobolsu şi Thosu iar al doilea de către Tuhutum împreună cu fiul său Horca, ajung în zona Porţii Meseşene .
Deşi s-au avansat mai multe ipoteze, datarea momentului în care războinicii maghiari au ajuns la Porta Mesesina/Poarta Meseşeană rămâne încă un subiect deschis. De remarcat faptul că, până acum, în spaţiul nord-vestic al României din care face parte Depresiunea Silvaniei împreună cu Poarta Meseşeană nu au fost descoperite morminte ale războinicilor maghiari timpurii. Acest fapt se poate datora stadiului cercetărilor dar poate avea şi alte cauze pe care în acest moment nu le putem identifica cu certitudine.
b. Ipoteze
Pe baza urmelor de arsură identificate în unele fortificaţii medievale timpurii, I. A. Pop susţine că evenimentele au avut loc cândva la începutul sec. X . Al. Madgearu consideră că atacurile maghiarilor au avut loc după anul 927, mai precis în deceniul al treilea al sec. X, începând cu anul 934 . În schimb, T. Sălăgean este de părere că atacurile din nord-vestul Transilvaniei s-au petrecut cu cel puţin o generaţie înainte de cucerirea centrului Transilvaniei, zona Alba Iulia . M. Ţiplic susţine că în anul 934, spaţiul nord-vestic se afla deja sub controlul războinicilor maghiari .
După cum se poate constata, cei care au abordat acest subiect au făcut variate propuneri privind cronologia evenimentelor redate de Anonymus. Cu toate că acestea s-au raportat la cercetările din zonă, nu şi-au propus şi o reevaluare/reinterpretare riguroasă a obiectivelor arheologice identificate în zona Porţii Meseşene.
c. Realităţile arheologice din zona Porţii Meseşene
În Depresiunea Silvaniei aflată în partea vestică a Porţii Meseşene, singurele elemente care pot fi atribuite războinicilor maghiari timpurii sunt cele trei săgeţi din fier descoperite într-o aşezare (2 exemplare) şi într-o fortificaţie (1 exemplar). Avem în vedere cele două săgeţi de formă triunghiulară prevăzute cu peduncul descoperite în nivelul de locuire din sec. X-XI din aşezarea de la Aghireş „Sub păşune” împreună cu săgeata de formă romboidală cu peduncul din fortificaţia de la Giurtelecu Şimleului „Coasta lui Damian” .
Acestor artefacte li se alătură şi ţinta/aplica din argint de la o tolbă de săgeţi, piesă descoperită tot în nivelul de locuire din sec. X-XI din aşezarea de la Aghireş „Sub păşune” . Obiectivele arheologice din care provin artefactele de mai sus au fost încadrate în a adoua jumătate a sec. X – începutul sec. XI (Aghireş „Sub păşune”) , respectiv sec. X-XI (Giurtelecu Şimleului „Coasta lui Damian”) .
Alte elemente care pot fi corelate cu prezenţa în zonă a maghiarilor timpurii sunt vasele cu gât canelat care au fost identificate în aşezările din sec. X-XI de la Zalău „Valea Mâţii” (Baza TCI) , Aghireş „Sub păşune” şi în fortificaţia din sec. XI de la Şimleu Silvaniei „Cetate/Várhegy” .
După cum am mai precizat, până în prezent, în nord-vestul României (implicit şi în Depresiunea Silvaniei) nu există descoperiri atribuibile maghiarilor timpurii în contexte arheologice databile în prima jumătate a sec. X. Având în vedere această realitate, se poate presupune că pătrunderea maghiarilor spre Poarta Meseşeană a avut loc după mijlocul sec. X, cândva în a doua jumătate a sec. X, ceea ce contrazice ipotezele cronologice avansate până acum în literatura de specialitate.
d. Un posibil traseu al războinicilor maghiari către Porta Mesesina/Poarta Meseşeană sugerat de contextele şi descoperirile arheologice din zonă
Anonymus descrie în Capitolele XXI şi XXII din Cronică traseul urmat de cele două grupuri de războinici către Poarta Meseşeană :
• după ce cuceresc fortificaţia Zotmar, grupul de războinici condus de Zobolsu şi Thosu pornesc spre portas Mezesinas.
• grupul de războinici condus de Tuhutum împreună cu fiul său Horca, porneşte din părţile Nyrului către Zyloc, iar de la Zyloc se deplasează spre partes Mezesinas unde fac joncţiunea cu grupul de războinici condus de Zobolsu şi Thosu care se afla deja acolo.
Dacă faptele relatate de Anonymus sunt reale, iar primele incursiuni ale războinicilor maghiari în spaţiul nord-vestic au urmat traseul precizat în Gesta Hungarorum, trebuie să încercăm identificarea acestui traseu urmărind caracteristicile descoperirilor arheologice.
Deplasarea celor două grupuri de războinici într-un teritoriu practic necunoscut acestora s-a făcut probabil şi cu sprijinul unor călăuze locale care cunoşteau conformaţia terenului şi căile facile de acces, mai ales că străbăteau un teritoriu ostil controlat de dux Menumorout. Aceştia au fost obligaţi să aleagă trasee accesibile unui grup ce se deplasează călare, cu zone joase şi largi care avantajează cavaleria, aceasta putându-se desfăşura şi manevra.
Având în vedere locurile descrise în Cronică şi caracteristicile geografice ale zonei, ca să poată ajunge la Porta Mesesina, cele două grupuri de războinici ar fi trebuit să urmărească cursul văilor :
• grupul lui Zobolsu şi Thosu a pornit de la castrum Zotmar pe valea largă a Someşului apoi pe cursul văii Sălajului până la Porta Mesesina.
• grupul lui Tuhutum şi Horca a pornit din partes Nyr (zona Carei) urmând cursul văii Crasnei, apoi pe cel al văii Zalăului până la Zyloc şi apoi la Porta Mesesina.
Cel de al doilea traseu pare să fie susţinut şi de dispunerea vestigilor arheologice atribuibile războinicilor maghiari pe care le-am menţionat mai devreme. Pe valea Crasnei, războinicii maghiari ar fi putut distruge fortificaţia de la Şimleu Silvaniei „Observator” amplasată strategic pe Dealul Măgura, fortificaţie care după datele pe care le deţinem nu mai funcţionează în a doua jumătate a sec. X .
În apropiere de această fortificaţie, în capătul unei ramificaţii a Dealului Măgura, la Giurtelecu Şimleului „Coasta lui Damian” a fost sondat arheologic un bot de deal fortificat în perioada dacică cu palisadă şi două şanţuri . Descoperirea în unul din cele două şanţuri a unei săgeţi din fier de formă romboidală prevăzută cu peduncul sugerează posibilitatea ca locul să fi fost fortificat şi în evul mediu timpuriu. Prezenţa săgeţii de formă romboidală la Giurtelecu Şimleului „Coasta lui Damian” poate fi pusă în relaţie cu momentul atacului asupra fortificaţiei de la Şimleu Silvaniei „Observator”.
Părăsind cursul văii Crasnei, războinicii maghiari ar fi trebuit să urmeze cursul văii Zalăului până la poalele Munţilor Meseş. Prezenţa acestora în zona Munţilor Meseş ar putea fi susţinută de săgeţile din fier de formă triunghiulară, ţinta/aplica de tolbă şi de ceramica cu gât canelat descoperite în nivelul de locuire databil după mijlocul sec. X din aşezarea de la Aghireş „Sub păşune” care se află la 3, 5 km distanţă (în direcţia nord-vest) de situl arheologic de la Zalău „Valea răchişorii/Pálvár”.
e. Zyloc-ul lui Anonymus. Încercare de localizare
Cele două grupuri de războinici s-au reunit la Poarta Meseşeană, Anonymus făcând precizarea că grupul condus de Tuhutum şi fiul său Horca s-au oprit mai întâi la Zyloc . Menţionarea acestui Zyloc în textul cronicii naşte întrebarea referitoare la motivul care i-a determinat pe aceştia să se oprească aici, înainte de a ajunge la Poarta Meseşeană ?
Anonymus nu oferă niciun fel de date despre acest Zyloc astfel că suntem nevoiţi să avansăm mai multe ipoteze:
• un toponim.
• o aşezare care se afla pe traseul urmat de grupul de războinici.
• în Cronică sunt amintite fortificaţii ori centre de putere. Dacă acel Zyloc ar fi fost o fortificaţie, Anonymus ar fi descris cucerirea acesteia.
• la Zyloc a existat o fortificaţie nemenţionată de Anonymus.
Având în vedere cele exprimate mai sus, credem că oprirea grupului de războinici a fost determinată de importanţa/rolul/statutul acelui Zyloc în momentul respectiv.
În literatura românească de specialitate s-a încercat identificarea pe teren a acestui Zyloc, obiectivele arheologice propuse fiind fortificaţia de la Ortelec „Cetate” şi aşezarea de la Zalău „Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” . Cronologia fortificaţiei de la Ortelec „Cetate” elimină din ecuaţie acest obiectiv . Dacă analizăm obiectivele arheologice identificate până acum în zona/apropierea Porţii Meseşene constatăm că sunt 5 situri care ar putea corespunde (parţial/total) perioadei în care s-au derulat evenimentelor descrise de Anonymus:
• aşezarea de la Zalău „B-dul M. Viteazul, nr. 104-106” (locuirea din a doua jumătate a sec. X/sfârşitul sec. X-începutul sec. XI).
• aşezarea şi cimitirul de la Zalău „Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” (sec. X)
• aşezarea de la Zalău „Valea Mâţii” (Baza TCI) (sec. X-XI).
• aşezarea de la Zalău „Valea Mâţii-Şcoala veche” (a doua jumătate a sec. X/sfârşitul sec. X- prima jumătate a sec. XI/sec. XI).
• aşezarea de la Aghireş „Sub păşune” (locuirea din a doua jumătate a sec. X-începutul sec. XI).
Dintre toate siturile aminitite mai sus, singurul care acoperă cronologic şi prima jumătate a sec. X (eventual şi sfârşirul sec. IX în cazul aşezării) este cel de la Zalău „Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” (aşezarea şi cimitirul). Etapa finală de locuire şi înmormântare din acest sit (a doua jumătate a sec. X) se află pe acelaşi palier cronologic cu momentul în care la Aghireş „Sub păşune” apar săgeţile caracteristice răiboinicilor stepelor. În plus, complexitatea acestui obiectiv arheologic, caracteristicile artefactelor şi poziţia geografică sunt elemente care contribuie la sustenabilitatea presupunerii noastre .
Presupunând că fortificaţia de la Zalău „Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” a fost contemporană cu celelalte vestigii identificate aici şi că în cimitir au fost înmormântaţi şi membri ai unei elite locale, prezenţa acesteia este justificată de faptul că astfel de construcţii au fost produsul clar al stratificării sociale, un apanaj al elitelor conducătoare, „centrul de comandă” al potentaţilor locali . Dacă fortificaţia nu a fost contemporană cu celelalte vestigii de aici, putem presupune că a fost construită de maghiari imediat după distrugerea/incendierea aşezării cândva în a doua jumătate a sec. X, ori că a fost ridicată de către regalitatea maghiară în sec. XI în cadrul sistemului de fortificaţii de graniţă (indagines) de pe linia Munţilor Meseş.
f. În loc de concluzii. Din nou ipoteze
În condiţiile în care, războinicii maghiari timpurii au sosit în zona Clujului în prima jumătate a sec. X , intervine problema căii de pătrundere a acestora în Transilvania deoarece, cel puţin până acum, cele mai timpurii artefacte aparţinând maghiarilor descoperite în vecinătatea vestică a Porţii Meseşene, nu se datează în prima jumătate a sec. X.
Studiindu-se artefactele aparţinând războinicilor maghiari, în literatura românească (şi nu numai) de specialitate s-a abordat deseori problema momentului/momentelor şi a direcţiei/direcţiilor de pătrundere a acestora în Transilvania, fiind sugerate mai multe variante: prin Poarta Meseşeană, pe valea Crişului Repede, valea Căpuşului, valea Mureşului .
Identificarea momentului/momentelor şi a direcţiei/direcţiilor de pătrundere a primilor maghiari în Transilvania depăşeşte zona studiată în prezentul demers, cu toate acestea nu putem să nu formulăm câteva ipoteze:
• posibilitatea ca războinicii maghiari înmormântaţi în zona Clujului să fi ajuns acolo trecând prin Poarta Meseşeană, ceea ce ar impune revizuirea cronologiei descoperirilor din zona Clujului şi datarea acestora după mijlocul sec. X .
• posibilitatea ca războinicii maghiari înmormântaţi în zona Clujului să fi ajuns acolo prin Poarta Meseşeană într-o etapă mai timpurie decât o sugerează descoperirile din zona Porţii Meseşene, fără ca aceştia să fi lăsat pe traseu urme arheologice palpabile.
• au pătruns în Terra Ultrasilvana prin nord-vest dar nu prin Poarta Meseşeană.
• au pătruns pe cursul văii Mureşului.
Coroborând toate datele la care am făcut referire mai sus, nu excludem o altă posibilitate mult mai complexă:
• o primă pătrundere să fi avut loc pe valea Mureşului. La baza alegerii acestei căi ar fi putut sta intenţia de a ataca zona din jurul anticului Apulum (Alba Iulia) controlată de bulgari, dacă avem în vedere opinia formulată de A. Madgearu care plasează atacul împotriva bulgarilor în jurul anilor 30 ai sec. X . Cu ocazia acestui atac să fi fost ocupată şi zona din jurul anticului Napoca (Cluj) pentru controlul surselor de sare.
• a doua pătrundere, mai târzie, să fi avut loc din direcţia nord-vest prin Poarta Meseşeană, după mijlocul sec. X .
În ceea ce priveşte cucerirea teritoriului până la Poarta Meseşeană, practic nord-estul teritoriului controlat de dux Menumorout, aceasta s-a produs în urma atacului combinat a două grupuri de războinici, primul condus de Zobolsu şi Thosu iar al doilea de către Tuhutum şi fiul său Horca.
Opiniile noastre exprimate cu această ocazie se bazează strict pe rezultatele săpăturilor arheologice derulate până acum în zona studiată. Datele pe care le vor oferi cercetările viitoare pot confirma sau infirma poziţia noastră, cu condiţia ca acestea să fie continuate şi aprofundate.
Translation - Hungarian a. Introduction
Among the historical sources which refer to the first incursions of the Hungarians in Transylvania during the 10th century, the Gesta Hungarorum or Chronicle of Anonymus is an important document1, despite the criticism/appeals it has received in the specialist literature2.
In chapters XXI and XII of the Gesta Hungarorum, Anonymus describes the moment when the two groups of Hungarian warriors, the first group led by Zobolsu and Thosu, the second one by Tuhutum and his son, Horca, reach the area of Poarta Meseşeană3.
Even though numerous hypotheses have been considered, the dating of the moment of arrival of the Hungarian warriors to the Porta Mesesina/Poarta Meseşeană remains an open issue. This may be due to the state of the research conducted here, but might have other causes as well, which, at present, are hard to identify with certainty.
b. Literature review of existing hypotheses
Based on traces of burning, identified in some early medieval fortifications, I. A. Pop argues that the events discussed occurred sometime in the early 10th century4. Al. Madgearu considers that the attacks of the Hungarians took place after the year 927, more specifically in the third decade of the 10th century, starting with the year 9345. In contrast, T. Sălăgean believes that the attacks in north-western Transylvania happened at least a generation earlier than the conquest of central Transylvania, in the Alba Iulia area6. M. Ţiplic claims that in 934, the north-western areas were already under the control of the Hungarian warriors7.
Evidently, those who have addressed this issue have made various proposals concerning the chronology of the events described by Anonymus. Even though the authors of these hypotheses utilized data from the research conducted in the area, they have not considered a rigorous revaluation/ reinterpretation of the archaeological sites identified in the area of Poarta Meseşeană.
c. The archaeological realities of the Poarta Meseşeană zone
The only elements that can be credited to early Hungarians in the western part of Poarta Meseşeană are the three iron arrowheads discovered in a settlement (2 pieces) and a fortification (1 piece). We are talking about the two triangular arrowheads discovered in the 10-11th century settlement layer at Aghireş “Sub păşune”8 and the diamond shaped arrowhead found at the fortification from Giurtelecu Şimleului “Coasta lui Damian”9.
These artefacts are joined by the silver sight of an arrows quiver, a piece also discovered in the 10-11th century settlement layer at Aghireş “Sub păşune”10. The archaeological sites, from which the mentioned artefacts come from, are dated to the second part of the 10th century- the start of the 11th century (Aghireş “Sub păşune”)11 and 10th-11th century (Giurtelecu Şimleului “Coasta lui Damian”)12.
Other items that can be correlated with the presence of early Hungarians in the area are the grooved neck vessels identified in 10-11th century settlements from Zalău “Valea Mâţii”13 (TCI base), Aghireş “Sub păşune”14 and the 11th century fortification from Şimleu Silvaniei “Cetate/Várhegy”15.
As I stated earlier, so far, in north-western Romania (including Depresiunea Silvaniei), no discoveries of the presence of early Hungarians in a context dated to the first half of the 10th century exist. Given this reality, it can be assumed that the incursion of Hungarians in the Poarta Meseşeană took place after the middle of the 10th century, sometime in the second half of the 10th century, a hypothesis which contradicts the chronology advanced, so far, in the specialist literature.
d. A possible route of the Hungarian warriors to Porta Mesesina/Poarta Meseşeană, implied by the archaeological contexts and find in the area
In chapters XXI and XXII of his chronicle, Anonymus describes the route followed by the two groups of warriors to the Poarta Meseşeană16:
• after conquering the fortification from Zotmar, the group of warriors led by Zobolsu and Thosu begin their journey to portas Mezezinas
• the group of warriors led by Tuhutum, with his son Horca, start off from parts of the Nyr towards Zyloc, and from Zyloc they move to partes Mezezinas, where they join with the group of warriors led by Zobolsu and Thosu, who were already there
If the accounts of the conquest related by Anonymus are credible, and the first incursions of the Hungarians followed the routes described in Gesta Hungarorum, we must try to identify these routes with the help of archaeological data.
The movement of the two groups of warriors in a virtually unknown territory was with the help of native guides, who knew the configuration of the terrain and easy access paths, especially the passes over hostile territory, controlled by dux Menumorout. They were forced to choose paths suited for a group that travels on horseback, in low-altitude, wide valleys, which benefit cavalry, allowing for cavalry maneuvers.
Given the places described in Anonymus’s chronicle and the geography of the area, in order to to reach Porta Mesesina, the two groups of warriors should have followed the following routes:
• Zobolsu and Thosu’s group started from castrum Zotmar on the wide valley of Someş, then the course of the valley of Sălaj, to Porta Mesesina.
• Tuhutum and Horca’s group started from partes Nyr (Carei), following the Crasna valley, then the Zalău valley, to Zyloc and then to Porta Mesesina.
The second route appears to be supported by archaeological traces of the Hungarian warriors that we mentioned earlier. In the Crasna valley, the Hungarian warriors could have destroyed the fortification from Şimleu Silvaniei “Observator”, strategically located on the Măgura hill, a fort which according to existing data, was out of use in the second half of the 10th century17.
Close to this fort, at the end of a branch of Măgura hill, at Giurtelecu Şimleului “Coasta lui Damian”, archeological surveying was conducted on a brow of the hill, which was fortified in the Dacian period with a palisade and two ditches18. The discovery in one of the two ditches of a diamond shaped iron arrowhead with peduncle19 suggests that the site has been fortified in the early medieval period. The presence of a diamond shaped arrowhead at Giurtelecu Şimleului "Coasta lui Damian" can be placed in the context of the attack on the fortification from Şimleu Silvaniei “Observator”.
Leaving the Crasna valley, the Hungarian warriors should have followed the Zalău valley to the foothills of the Meseş mountains. Their presence in the Meseş mountains could be supported by the discovery of triangular iron arrowheads, of the sight/applied part of a quiver and of grooved neck pottery20 in the settlement layer, datable to the second part of the 10th century, in the settlement of Aghireş “Sub păşune”21. This site is 3,5 away (in a north-west direction) from the archaeological site of Zalău “Valea răchişorii/Pálvár”.
e. Anonymus’s Zyloc. An attempt at locating the site.
The two groups of warriors reunited at the Poarta Meseşeană, Anonymus specifying that the group led by Tuhutum and his son Horca stopped first at Zyloc22. The mentioning of this Zyloc raises the question of why did the warriors decide to stop here, before reaching the Poarta Meseşeană.
Anonymus doesn’t provide any data about Zyloc so we are forced to put forward several hypotheses:
• a toponym
• a settlement which lies on the route taken by group of warriors
• in the Chronicle fortifications, or centers of power are mentioned. If Zyloc would have been a fortification, Anonymus should have described its conquest by the warriors
• at Zyloc there was a fortification, unmentioned by Anonymus
Taking into consideration the points mentioned above, we believe that the stopping of the group of warriors was due to the importance/role/status of Zyloc at the time.
In the Romanian specialist literature there have been attempts at locating this Zyloc on the field, the sites considered being the fortification from Ortelec “Cetate”23 and the settlement from Zalău “Valea răchişorii/Pálvár”24. The chronology of the fortification from Ortelec “Cetate” takes this site out of the equation25. If we analyse all the archaeological sites identified so far in the area of the Poarta Meseşeană, we will find that there are 5 sites which could be datable (partially/totally) to the period in which the events described by Anonymus took place in:
• thesettlement from Zalău “B-dul M. Viteazul, nr. 104-106” (settled from the second half of the 10th century – start of the 11th century)
• the settlement and the cemetery from Zalău “Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” (10th century)
• the settlement from Zalău “Valea Mâţii” (TCI Base) (10th-11th century)
• the settlement from Zalău “Valea Mâţii-Şcoala veche” (the second half/end of the 10th century- first half of the 11th century/ 11th century)
• the settlement from Aghireş “Sub păşune” (settled from the second half of the 10th century- start of 11th century)
Of all of the sites mentioned above, the only one covering the first half of the 10th century chronologically (possibly the end of the 9th century in case of settlement) is the one from Zalău “Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” (the settlement and the cemetery). The final traces of habitation and use for burial of this site (the second half of the 10th century) are on the same chronological level as the arrowheads, typical for steppe warriors, appear at Aghireş “Sub păşune”. In addition, the complexity of this site, the characteristics of the artefacts and the geographical position are factors that contribute to the sustainability of our hypothesis26.
Assuming that the fortification from Zalău “Valea răchişorii/Pálvár” was contemporary with other archaeological features identified in the area, and that in the cemetery burial of the local elite took place, its presence is justified by the fact that such constructions were clearly the product of social stratification, a privilege of the ruling elites, a “command center” of the potential local population27. If the fortification was not contemporary with other features found here, we can assume that it was built by the Hungarians immediately after the destruction/burning of the settlement sometime in the second half of the 10th century, or that it was built by the Hungarian royalty in the 11th century, as a part of the system of border fortifications (indagines) on the line of the Meseş mountains.
f. New hypotheses
If the early Hungarian warriors arrived in the area of Cluj in the first half of the 10th century28, we are faced with the problem of their route of penetration into Transylvania, keep in mind that at least until now, the earliest discovered artefacts belonging to the Hungarians to the west of Poarta Meseşeană, are dated later than the first half of the 10th century.
In the study of artefacts belonging to the Hungarian warriors in the Romanian literature, the problem of the moment or moments and the directions of the incursions of these warriors has been addressed many times, several hypotheses being presented: through Poarta Meseşeană, through the valley of Crişului Repede, valley of Căpuşului, valley of Mureşului29.
Even though the area of study sufficient for identifying these moments and directions of incursion of early Hungarians exceeds the current studied area, we are inclined to formulate a few hypotheses:
• the possibility that the Hungarian warriors buried in the Cluj area have arrived via the Poarta Meseşeană, which would require the revision of the chronologies of the discoveries in the area of Cluj 30
• the possibility that the Hungarian warriors buried in the Cluj area arrived there earlier than the discoveries from the zone of the Poarta Meseşeană suggest, the warriors not leaving any archaeological traces on their route
• that they entered Terra Ultrasilvana from the north-west, but not through Poarta Meseşeană
• they entered through the the valley of Mureşului
Corroborating all data to which I referred above, we have to consider another possibility, which is much more complex:
• a first incursion could have happened in the valley of Mureşului. At the basis of this choice of path could have been the intention of attacking the area around the ancient Apulum (Alba Iulia)31, controlled by the Bulgarians. This ties in well with the research conducted by A. Madgearu, which places the attack against the Bulgarians near the third decade of the 10th century32. During this attack the area around ancient Napoca (Cluj) could have been occupied as well, for the control of sources of raw salt.
• the second incursion, a later one, came from a north-west direction, through the Poarta Meseşeană, after mid-10th century33
Regarding the conquest of the territory down to the Poarta Meseşeană, essentially the territory controlled by dux Menumorout, this could have happened with the combined attack of the two groups of warriors, the first one led by Zobolsu and Thosu, and the second by Tuhutum and his son Horca.
Our views expressed on this occasion are based strictly on the results of archaeological excavations carried out so far in the studied area. The data future research can provide could confirm or refute our position on the subject, provided that the research is continued and elaborated further.

Cercetarea arheologică a monumentelor istorice, atât în faza proiectării, cât și în perioada execuției lucrărilor de restaurare, este vitală, deoarece toate elementele structurale subterane și stratigrafia, nu numai că oferă o serie de informații extrem de importante pentru ingineri și executanți, dar facilitează și încadrarea cronologică a diferitelor faze de construcție a edificiilor istorice. Astfel, investigațiile arheologice preventive oferă date despre starea fundațiilor, stratigrafia generală din zona construcției, iar cercetarea derulată în paralel cu execuția lucrărilor de reabilitare, aduc la lumină un spectru mult mai larg de informații despre perioada/perioadele în care edificiul a fost ridicat sau s-a intervenit asupra ei.
Biserica reformată din Sic și-a asigurat prezența în literatura de specialitate mai ales datorită frescelor păstrate pe zidăria corului central și a pilaștrilor navei laterale sudice, respectiv pe pereții acesteia. Construcția bazilicală cu trei nave a suferit o întreagă serie de intervenții de-a lungul secolelor XV, XVIII și XX, urmând, să primească aspectul final după lucrările de restaurare din anii 1960. Într-o perioadă anterioară acesteia, ca urmare a unei furtuni ce a devastat construcția (1946), au fost necesare intervenții majore, dintre care cea mai importantă s-a materializat prin demolarea turnului gotic, de secol XV, optându-se pentru construcția turnului vizibil și azi. Mai mult, în această perioadă, odată cu creșterea numărului de enoriași din sat, s-a recurs și la construcția unui transept, pe latura nordică a navei.
Satul în sine, apare menționat prima dată în documente din secolul al XIII, după care comunitatea din Sic, datorită zonei de extracție a sării în care se află, ia un avânt imens de dezvoltare, oferind loc și unor populații denumite ”oaspeți” (hospites de Zeek - 1291) strămutate din diferite zone ale Regatului Ungariei, care probabil au fost însărcinați cu administrarea logisticii legate de extracția, depozitarea și transportul sării.
Cele mai cunoscute obiective din apropierea monumentului de la Sic sunt fortificația de la Dăbâca (sec. XI-XIII), Ansamblul Castelului Bánffy de la Bonțida (sec. XIII-XIX), precum și alte edificii ecleziastice și laice medievale, care dau dovadă de o evoluție impresionantă a zonei, tocmai datorită elementului aflat în monopol regal: sarea.
Prima cercetare arheologică profesionistă asupra monumentului, este efectuată în 2007, sub conducerea științifică a arheologului Dr. Daniela MARCU-ISTRATE, în momentul în care debutează procesul de proiectare a reabilitării monumentului. Investigațiile campaniei anului 2007 au vizat în special stabilirea cotelor de fundare a diferitelor elemente arhitecturale ale bisericii, dar au urmărit și cercetarea relațiilor dintre componentele de zidărie (fațada de vest, nava laterală sudică, punctul de contact dintre cor și nava laterală nordică, zidul de incintă, umărul navei laterale sud, pe latura estică).
În anul 2013 debutează lucrările care urmăresc intervențiile asupra substructurilor arhitecturale, fază, care în cazul tuturor monumentelor istorice, induce obligatoriu cercetarea arheologică preventivă. Campania anului 2013, întreprinsă sub responsabilitatea științifică a arheologului CSÓK Zsolt, a înregistrat informații provenite din 20 de suprafețe de cercetare, care permit alcătuirea unei imagini succinte, referitoare la fazele și perioada/perioadele de construcție ale monumentului. Trebuie însă specificat un aspect, care a reprezentat un obstacol major în formarea imaginii cronologice ale bisericii: multiplele intervenții asupra edificiului, au rezultat desființarea majorității contextelor arheologice, care ar fi putut servi contribuții ferme stabilirii perioadelor de folosire și construcție. S-a intervenit atât asupra fundațiilor, cât și în elementele funerare din biserică, rezultând, ca cea mai mare parte a înmormântărilor, să fie ”jefuite”.
Nava centrală
Cele mai masive intervenții structurale au fost înregistrate pe latura de vest a navei centrale, respectiv pe latura de nord a navei laterale nord. În ceea ce privește nava centrală, aici a fost identificată fundația turnului gotic, demolat pe parcursul lucrărilor de ”restaurare” din 1946, de unde rezultă și ancadramentele gotice amplasate pe zidul navei laterale. Mai mult, în acest sector a fost identificat și primul mormânt cu cadru realizat din pietre (cistă), dar, care din păcate a fost golit total, anterior cercetărilor anului 2013. Interesant de reținut este faptul, că în zona adosării turnului modern la nava centrală, la nivel de fundație, apare un zid sec, cu dimensiuni impresionante, a cărei funcționalitate rămâne necunoscută, până când eventualele cercetări viitoare se vor concentra pe această zonă.
Nava laterală nord
Acest element arhitectural este o adăugire modernă, probabil contemporană cu edificarea transeptului. Atât modalitatea de construcție extrem de neglijentă, cât și fundația superficială (în cel mai bun caz, -0.60 m), dar și elementele gotice introduse în structura ei, argumentează cronologia târzie a aceste componente.
Nava laterală sud
Majoritatea elementelor de datare ale navei laterale pledează încadrarea cronologică a construcției ei, imediat după edificarea corului central. Adosarea ei la colaterala sudică a corului argumentează afirmația de mai sus, iar picturile murale nu fac altceva, decât să completeze această supoziție. Mai mult de atât, nivelul puternic de arsură situat imediat deasupra primului orizont de înmormântări, regăsit de altfel și în corul central, poate fi interpretat ca un indiciu important asupra primei incendieri ale bisericii, survenite cu ocazia Invaziei Tătaro-Mongole (1241-1242). În zona centrală a navei laterale, a fost identificată o altă înmormântare în cistă, de data aceasta, cadrul spațiului funerar fiind realizat din cărămizi, lipite cu mortar, conferindu-i astfel un aspect foarte îngrijit și pretențios.
Corul
Cea mai importantă componentă arhitecturală a bisericii, a suferit și cele mai grave intervenții asupra structurii ei, mai ales la nivelul fundațiilor. Probabil pe parcursul intervențiilor petrecute în anii 1960, fundației i-a fost aplicată o subzidire masivă cu beton, care pătrunde la adâncimea de 2,31 m de la nivelul actual de călcare. Șanțul de implantare a acestei sub-structuri moderne a deranjat cea mai mare parte a contextelor arheologice din cor.
Materiale arheologice
Pe întreaga durată a cercetării arheologice preventive, a fost identificat un singur complex arheologic intact, care a conținut și piesă de inventar: este vorba de mormântul nr. 62, în secțiunea 27, care a avut plasat în zona toracelui, o monedă de bronz emisă de regele Béla al III-lea (1148-1196). O altă piesă extrem de interesantă, provine din mormântul nr. 61 (mormânt de copil în cistă), un inel de buclă din bronz, cu capătul în forma literei ”S”, piesă, care poate fi datată larg, pe parcursul secolelor XIII-XIV.
Considerații cronologice
Dacă ne bazăm pe analogiile arhitecturale din Transilvania, dar și pe cele câteva vestigii arheologice recuperate, putem plasa perioada construcției bisericii pe palierul cronologic eșalonat între finele secolului al XII-lea, debutul secolului următor. Atât prin stil, cât și prin elementele ei decorative, acest edificiu de cult denotă existența la Sic a unei comunități forte puternice, bazate pe potențialul economic conferit de extracția și transportul sării.

Translation - Hungarian Archaeological research of historical monuments, in both the planning phase and during restoration work, is vital because all the structural elements and the underground stratigraphy not only provides valuable first-hand information to the engineers and workers, but also ensures the establishment of a chronology for the different phases of construction of historic sites. Preventive archaeology can obtain data about the conditions of foundations, general stratigraphy of the building, and when it is conducted at the same time as the restoration works, archaeological investigations can provide a broader insight into the time period/ periods when the buildings was erected or modified.
The Sic reformed church is often discussed in specialist literature, mainly due to the frescoes preserved on the central choir walls and on the pilasters and walls of the southern side nave. The basilica with three naves suffered a series of interventions in the course of the 15th, 18th and 20th centuries, the final form being established by the restoration works in the 1960’s. In a previous period, following a storm which devastated the building, major interventions were necessary, of which one of the most important was the demolishing of the gothic tower, from the 15th century, opting for the construction of the tower visible today. Moreover, during this period, the increasing number of members of the parish led to the construction of a transept on the north side of the nave.
The village itself is first mentioned in documents from the 13th century, after which the community of Sic, thanks to the salt extraction area in which it is located, launches into a huge economic boom, providing shelter for populations which are called “guests” (hospites de Zeek - 1291), displaced from different areas of the Kingdom of Hungary, who were probably charged with logistical administration related to the extraction, storage and transportation of salt.
The most well-known monuments close to the church from Sic are the fortification from Dăbâca (9th-13th century), the Bánffy castle from Bonțida (8th-19th century), as well as other ecclesiastical and laic medieval buildings, demonstrating the impressive evolution of the area, due to a resource under royal monopoly: salt.
The first professional archeological research conducted at the site took place in 2007 under the scientific leadership of the archaeologist Dr. Daniela MARCU-ISTRATE, when the plans for the restoration of the building were first put into effect. The interest of the 2007 campaign was mainly the documentation of the foundation depth of different architectural elements present here, however the relation between interior masonry components was also investigated (the northern facade, the southern side nave, the point of contact between the coir and the northern side nave, the interior wall, the shoulder of the southern side nave, on the eastern side).
In 2013 work began on the substructures of the church, which lead to mandatory preventive archaeology being carried out. The 2013 campaign, conducted under the scientific responsibility of CSÓK Zsolt, recorded information from 20 research trenches, allowing the formation of a brief image about the phases and period/periods of construction of the monument. It should be mentioned, however, that serious problems arose in establishing a chronology for the church: the multiple interventions carried out on the building led to the loss of most of the archeological contexts which could have provided a real insight into the periods of use and construction. Interventions took place on both the foundations and the funeral elements of the church, resulting in most burials being “plundered”.
The central nave
The most extensive structural interventions were recorded on the western side of the central nave and the north side of the northern side nave. Regarding the central nave, here the foundation of the gothic tower was identified, demolished during the “restoration works” of 1946, from where the gothic frames located on the wall of the side nave originate. Moreover, in this section, the first tomb with a stone frame (cist) was identified, but it has unfortunately been completely emptied before 2013. An interesting fact is that near where the modern tower was added to the central nave, at foundation level, a dry wall with impressive dimensions can be seen, the function of which remains a mystery until any future research will focus on this area.
The northern side nave
This architectural element is a modern addition, probably contemporary with the construction of the transept. The shallow foundation (maximum -0.60 m), poor structural integrity, but also the gothic elements added to its structure suggest a late dating for this component.
The southern side nave
Most of the datable elements of the nave point to a date of construction immediately following the construction of the central choir. The addition of the nave to the southern part of the choir argues for the same dating and the murals also attest to this theory. Moreover, the strongly burnt layer, right above the first layer of burials, also found in the central choir, can be interpreted as a strong indication of the first arson of the church, with the occasion of the Tatar-Mongolian invasion (1241-1242). In the central area of the side nave, another burial with cist was identified, but this time, the funerary space was marked with bricks, bonded with mortar, thus giving it a very meticulous aspect.
Choir
The most important architectural component of the church suffered the most serious interventions on its structure, especially on the foundations. Probably during the works on the church structure in the 1960’s, a layer of massive concrete was applied under the original foundation, which reaches a depth of 2.31 m from the current walking level. The ditch for the implantation of this modern substructure disturbed most of the archaeological context in the choir.
Archaeological materials
Throughout the duration of archaeological work carried out at the Sic reformed church a single intact archaeological complex has been identified, which also contained an inventory piece: This is the no. 62 tomb, in section 27, where a bronze coin issued by King Béla III (1148-1196) was found on the upper body. Another very interesting find comes from the tomb no. 61 (child cist grave), a bronze buckle ring, with its end in the shape of the letter “S”, which can be loosely dated to the 13th-14th centuries.
Chronological considerations
If we rely on resemblance to similar architectural features in Transylvania, but also on the few archaeological remains recovered, we can place the construction of the church chronologically between the end of the 12th century and the begging of the 13th century. Both in style and decorative elements, this monument signifies the existence of a strong community at Sic, based on the economic potential of the extraction and transportation of salt.
