But fear of the night beyond the border crossing
I will refuse.
Come, night. We'll gallop on and with our fires irradiate
The vast, open plain.
Through smoke upon the plain our holy flag will coruscate,
And cold steel of the Khan ...
And ceaseless fight! True peace is but for dreams yet,
Through blood and dust we pass,
She flies on and on, the wild mare of the wild steppe,
Trampling feather-grass ...
No end in sight! Milestones, escarpments flicker-
Halt, will you, halt!
The clouds show their fear, they gather closer, thicker,

Like a storm cloud, rising after midnight
Came the Prince's host,
And, afar off, clinging to a stirrup tight,
A mother's keening voice.
And, describing circles, birds unsleeping
Soared far off, on high,
While o'er Rus and o'er her prince watch keeping,
Lightning lit the sky.
Eagles, screaming o'er the Tatar's marshalled ranks,
Threats of anguish railed,
While Nepryadva hid with fog her gentle banks,
Like a princess veiled.
And with fog the still Nepryadva lining,
For me, straight as a bolt,
You came, in robes that set the air all shining,
Unstartled stood my colt.
For your friend you blazed, a wave of silver
On my sharpened blade,
Dusted off and polished up the hauberk
On my shoulder laid.

Bio
I am a literary translator with a particular purpose: to help
talented and aspiring Russian poets, songwriters and authors reach the
English-speaking world.
I am a native speaker - and teacher - of English. I was an
international tax and transfer pricing specialist for 22 years, working for the
UK tax authority and the consulting firm Deloitte.
I have a lifelong interest in music and songwriting, and I
translate song lyrics in a manner that preserves both ryhme and scansion, while
adhering to the principles of professional translation.
I have passed two parts of the three-part Chartered
Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation: General (passed with
Distinction) and Business (passed with Merit).
I have an MA in Classics from Corpus Christi
College Cambridge, the core elements of which were literature, history, and
translation.
To support my translation business, and to ensure that my
language skills are constantly improving, I immerse myself in reading,
studying, speaking and listening to Russian. I have a network of friends and
associates in Russia who support me in this, and in my business. I spend about two months each year in Russia.
