Admit it: you had no idea what "кодирование" was until you did your research and you wouldn't have guessed what the heck "coded for alcoholism" meant ;)

Personally I think its all bullsh*t. I happen to have an acquaintance that's "got coded" quite a few times. The "treatments' comprised a forty minutes' chat with a psychologist/psychiatrist (or whatever those charlatans call themselves), a shot in the butt and the promise of an agonizing demise, should he slip. Interestingly enough, the guy is still around and drinking :)

Coding was created by a Soviet psychiatrist, Alexander Dovzhenko, who assumed a cult-like status in the treatment of alcoholism. "The Dovzhenko method is basically a form of hypnosis: You drink, you die," said Andrei Yermoshin, a private psychotherapist who no longer uses the method, preferring long-term therapy. "It's fast and cheap, and supposedly you don't have a problem for a year or two years or five years, depending on how long you have been coded for."

The start of the procedure that is now called the coding for alcoholism was initiated in the first half of the last century. Before that, something similar was used in folk medicine, shamans, and others. People asked for help from their relatives to get rid of alcohol addiction.

The essence of coding develops in a patient the next:

feeling of full disgust for alcoholic beverages;
reflex as an obstacle from strong drinks.

would sound very much like a "Walk for the Cure" or "Starving for Peace" or something, hehe. This is indeed a purely Russian thing. Use "treated for alcoholism" and be done with it.
