James Taylor › You’ve Got A Friend albums · lyrics

When youre down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, whoa nothing is going right.
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,
And you know whereever I am
Ill come running, oh yeah baby
To see you again.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
All you have to do is call
And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Youve got a friend.

If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
And soon I will be knocking upon your door.
You just call out my name and you know where ever I am
Ill come running to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, aint it good to know that youve got a friend?
People can be so cold.
Theyll hurt you and desert you.
Well theyll take your soul if you let them.
Oh yeah, but dont you let them.

You just call out my name and you know wherever I am
Ill come running to see you again.
Oh babe, dont you know that,
Winter spring summer or fall,
Hey now, all youve got to do is call.
Lord, Ill be there, yes I will.
Youve got a friend.
Youve got a friend.
Aint it good to know youve got a friend.
Aint it good to know youve got a friend.
Youve got a friend.

Proletarian and Labor Songs Feb 4, 2007

http://www.well.com/conf/media/SF_Free_Press/nov7/hamlin.html

A waltz through the songs of America's rich labor history
By Jesse Hamlin
Special to the Free Press

You can't have a strike without the songs. Let's sing one for Joe Hill, bard of the Wobblies. A little Woody Guthrie to rouse the spirits and strengthen our resolve -- perhaps a chorus or two of "Solidarity" to get us in a righteous groove.

We could sing praises to Woody's "Union Maid," who "never was afraid of goons ginks and company finks." Why not move them with "Which Side Are You On?," written in 1931 by Florence Reece, the wife of a striking Appalachian coal miner who, according to labor lore, scribbled the words on the back of a calendar after the goons dragged her husband away. She set the lyrics to the haunting melody of an old Scottish ballad, "Jackie Frazier."

The classic songs of the American labor movement draw from the deep well of secular and sacred music heard around the country at the turn of the century: pop tunes picked up from vaudeville shows, sheet music and piano rolls, and gospel hymns from both black and white churches.

The songs of the Industrial Workers of the World -- the radical unionists called Wobblies who roved the West in the early 1900s -- are rich in the language and lore of the American hobo. The Wobblies took up the vocabulary of the tramps who hopped the rails looking for work, says Archie Green, the esteemed San Francisco folklorist. "They tranferred the lore of the jungles -- the hobos' term for their camps along the railroad tracks or streams," Green says. "Joe Hill's 'Meet Me in the Jungle, Louie,' is sung to the melody of 'Meet Me in St. Louis, Louie,' the hit of the 1904 St. Louis Exposition."

Most of the Wobblie songs parody the hits of the day; Hill's version of "Casey Jones" turns the beloved engineer into a scab driving his train into a picket line. He breaks his back and goes to hell.

Hill was executed in Salt Lake City in 1915 for allegedly murdering a grocer. Twenty-one years later, two young radicals on the staff of a commie summer camp in the Catskills immortalized him in a song written for a skit: "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night."

The lyrics were written by Alfred Hayes and set to music by Earl Robinson, who later had a hit with his patriotic cantata "Ballad for Americans." He also wrote "The House I Live In," recorded by brother Sinatra.

Ralph Chaplin's "Solidarity Forever," written during a 1913 coal miners' strike in West Virginia, is a great labor hymn. Chaplin, a writer, printer and cartoonist, "was the kind of guy, " Green says, "who'd be on strike at the Chron right now. He also wrote some great jail poetry. He was jailed, like many Wobblies, for opposing World War I."

And let's not forget "Roll the Union On," written in 1935 by John Handcox, a black sharecropper who belonged to the integrated Southern Tenant Farmers union. He grafted his words onto the spiritual "Roll the Chariot On." We already suggested Guthrie's "Union Made" but didn't mention that it is based on the ragtime melody "Red Wing."

Green would love to hear us sing "We Shall Overcome." The civil rights anthem is a gospel song sung by striking black tobacco workers in Raleigh, N.C., in the early 1930s. "It was moving to hear the Chinese students singing it in Tiananamen Square, " Green said. "These songs still have bite because they tap into an almost subterranean feeling of solidarity, unity and justice. They hit moral chords."

The best place to find recordings of these labor classics -- by Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, Joe Glazer and others -- is Down Home Music in El Cerrito. To buy a copy of the Wobblie songbook, first published in Spokane, Wash., in 1909, stop by the Wobblie office in the Grant Building at 7th and Market in San Francisco.

Old Wobblies never die, they just keep on warbling. Sing!

Another song popular during my childhood years Feb 4, 2007

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmTgnpzPS64

Sixteen Tons (Tennessee Ernie Ford)

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you, then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

And some background ...

Hey Jude
(As Recorded by Tiny Tim & Brave Combo)

(Lennon-McCartney)

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey, Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better.

And any time you feel the pain, hey, Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
Well don't you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder

Hey, Jude! Don't let her down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember, to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey, Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you, hey, Jude,
You'll do, the movement you need is on your shoulder

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

John Henry Feb 4, 2007

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y77-eBqIHDE&mode=related&search=

John Henry (Tennessee Ernie Ford)

John Henry was a steel drivin' man
Drove Steel all over the land
Before I let the steam hammer get me down
I'm a-gonna die with my hammer in my hand
Die with my hammer in my hand

John Henry went to the tunnel to drive
Steam hammer by his side
He beat the steam hammer to the top of the hill
He laid down his hammer and he cried, Lord
Laid down his hammer and he cried

John Henry had a lovin' little wife
Her name was Polly Ann
Johnny got sick and he had to go to bed
Polly drove steel like a man, yes
Polly drove steel like a man

They buried John Henry in the graveyard
They laid him down in the sand
Everytime a freight train come puffin' by
They say yonder lies a steel drivin' man
Yonder lies a steel drivin' man

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_(folklore)

Perhaps some parallel could be drawn with today's outsourcing and globalization ...

While he may or may not have been a real character, Henry became an important symbol of the working man. His story can be seen as an archetypically tragic illustration of the futility of fighting the technological progress so evident in the ongoing 19th century upset of traditional physical labor roles. Some labor advocates interpret the legend as saying that even if you are the most heroic worker of time-honored practices, management remains more interested in efficiency and production than in your health and well-being; though John Henry worked himself to death, they replaced him with a machine anyway. Thus the legend of John Henry has been a staple of leftist politics, labor organizing and American counter-culture for well over one hundred years.

A Well-known Song by Stephen Foster Feb 4, 2007

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nEfjdOuJts

Oh! Susanna (James Taylor and Johnny Cash)

~~ Words and Music by Stephen Foster ~~

Well, I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee
I'm bound for Louisiana my own true love for to see
It did rain all night the day I left
the weather was bone dry
Now the sun was so hot I froze myself
Susanna don't you on and cry

I said, Oh Susanna, child, don't you cry for me
As I come from Alabama
with my banjo on my knee

Now honey, while I got you with me
I sing a happy tune
Miss you when you leave me
like the roses missed in June
Lord, and if you ever come back
I'm gonna hold you all night long
And if you ever have to leave me
I will sing a sad, sad song

And I sing, Oh Susanna, now don't you cry for me
'cause I come from Alabama
with my banjo on my knee

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A performance by Matthew Sabatella

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8yrBeigJwU&mode=related&search=

I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee;
I'm goin' to Lou'siana my true love for to see.
It rained all night the day I left,
the weather it was dry;
The sun so hot I froze to death,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I come from Alabama,
with my banjo on my knee.

I had a dream the other night,
When everything was still;
I thought I saw Susanna dear,
A-coming down the hill.
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth,
The tear was in her eye,
Said I, I'm coming from the south,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I come from Alabama,
with my banjo on my knee.

I soon will be in New Orleans,
And then I'll look all 'round,
And when I find Susanna,
I'll fall upon the ground.
But if I do not find her,
This darkey'll surely die,
And when I'm dead and buried,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I come from Alabama,
with my banjo on my knee.

I Dream of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Marilyn Horne)

a poem and song by Stephen Foster

I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair,
Borne, like a vapor, on the summer air;
I see her tripping where the bright streams play,
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way.
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour,
Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er:
Oh! I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair,
Floating, like a vapor, on the soft summer air.

I long for Jeanie with the daydawn smile,
Radiant in gladness, warm with winning guile;
I hear her melodies, like joys gone by,
Sighing round my heart o'er the fond hopes that die:
Sighing like the night wind and sobbing like the rain,
Wailing for the lost one that comes not again:
Oh! I long for Jeanie, and my heart bows low,
Never more to find her where the bright waters flow.

I sigh for Jeanie, but her light form strayed
Far from the fond hearts round her native glade;
Her smiles have vanished and her sweet songs flown,
Flitting like the dreams that have cheered us and gone.
Now the nodding wild flowers may wither on the shore
While her gentle fingers will cull them no more:
Oh! I sigh for Jeanie with the light brown hair,
Floating, like a vapor, on the soft summer air.

Beautiful dreamer Feb 4, 2007

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yZfVckFmsw&mode=related&search=

Stephen foster

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day,
Lulld by the moonlight have all passd away!

Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of lifes busy throng

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.

Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
Een as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,

Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

STEVE, 我比較喜歡這一首,上音樂課時,望著年輕的女老師唱,十分投入,其他同學就百鳥歸巢般,絕無情趣,又不認真,替老師納悶。

Mario Lanza
Ein zwei drei vier
Lift your stein and drink your beer
Ein zwei drei vier
Lift your stein and drink your beer

Drink! Drink! Drink!
To eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
To lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree!

Here's a hope that those bright eyes will shine
Lovingly, longingly soon into mine!
May those lips that are red and sweet,
Tonight with joy my own lips meet!

Drink! Drink!
Let the toast start!
May young hearts never part!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
Let every true lover salute his sweetheart!

Drink! Drink! Drink!
To arms that are white and warm as a rose in the sun!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
To hearts that will love one, only when I am the one!
Here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
Tenderly, trustingly soon around mine!

All I ask is the right to see those smiling eyes beguiling me
Drink! Drink!
Let the toast start!
May young hearts never part!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
Let every true lover salute his sweetheart!
Let's drink!

Mario Lanza - I'll Walk With God

I'll walk with god
From this day on
His helping hand I'll lean upon
This is my prayer my humble plea
May the lord be ever with me

There is no death though eyes grow dim
There is no fear when I'm near to him
I'll lean on him forever
And he'll forsake me never

He will not fail me as long as my faith is strong
What ever road I may walk alone

I'll walk with god
I'll take his hand
I'll talk with god he'll understand
I'll pray to him
Each day to him

And he'll hear the words that I say
His hand will guide my throne and rod
And I'll never walk alone
While I walk with god

Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue (Crystal Gayle)

Don't know when I've been so blue
Don't know what's come over you
You've found someone new
And don't it make my brown eyes blue

I'll be fine when you're gone
I'll just cry all night long
Say it isn't true
And don't it make my brown eyes blue

Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies
Give me no reasons, give me alibis
Tell me you love me and don't make me cry
Say anything but don't say goodbye

I didn't mean to treat you bad
Didn't know just what I had
But, honey, now I do
And don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue
